Veteran golfer Yuko Togawa beat two others via a scorecard tiebreak to win the July tournament of the CNMI Women’s Golf Association last Saturday at the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort east course.
Togawa, a 5-handicapper, finished tied with Chang Eun Ae and Terry Guerrero with identical net scores of 72, but the latter eventually took the monthly plum due to her superior handicap.
The July winner built her net 72 after starting off with a 41 in the front nine. She then dazzled with a par 36 in the last nine holes for a 77 gross. Ae took second place after firing 45-43 for a gross score of 88, while Guerrero settled for third after submitting a 45-45 for a pre-handicap score of 90.
Togawa said she was lucky to finish tied for the lead and fortunate to come out as No. 1 for the month after the tiebreaker was calculated.
“All the members could compete according to the U.S. Golf Association handicap and challenge while enjoying the difference in handicap. It was a match that felt the fairness of this handicap,” she said.
The CNMI women’s national coach for the just concluded Northern Marianas Pacific Mini Games 2022 attributed her win to the experience she obtained during the quadrennial event.
“Of course, coaching broadened my horizons in many ways.”
While playing conditions weren’t ideal as the golf resort was aerating the course, Togawa said she had fun playing on the east course again after a long absence.
A total of 15 golfers took part in the CWGA July tournament. The rest were Sherlyn Jones (net 75), Janet Torres (net 76), Lou Kim (net 78), Lydia Tan (net 81), Mio Kim (net 81), Rose Rohringer (net 85), Betty Bai (gross 95), Nana Liu (gross 98), Kattie Long (gross 103), Emily Qiu (gross 104), and Quennei (gross 105).
CWGA’s next monthly tournament will be on Aug. 8 at the Coral Ocean Resort golf course.
The club continues to look for new members as the season continues. For those interested in becoming a member of CWGA or for more information, contact CWGA president Yuko Togawa.
