Youth Congress discusses Marianas reunification, string of bomb threats
HAGATNA, Guam—The 30th Guam Youth Congress convened for regular session last Jan. 23, 2016, to discuss the following:
Resolution No. 17-30, introduced by Reps. Santos, Arce, and Casila, is relative to opening the discussion of uniting the Chamorro people of Guam and the CNMI under one mutually respectful and understanding government.
The resolution aims to start discussions on a reunification plan of the two territories within the next two years in order to gage feasibility and sustainability issues.The Resolution passed in a 17-2 vote.
Resolution No. 18-30, introduced by Reps. Alcairo, Arce, Madlangbayan, Makepeace, Quinene, McDonald, Lin, Garcia, Adawag, Delorie, and Fejeran, is relative to expressing the position of the 30th Guam Youth Congress with great disappointment in regards to the numerous bomb threats experienced by various schools throughout Guam. The resolution also supports prosecuting those found accountable to the fullest extent of the law. After a brief recess, the resolution was amended to include the request of DOE Administrators in continuing to enact preventative measures in an attempt to deter further threats of terrorism. The resolution passed unanimously.
Rep. Javan Santos stated, “Guam and the Northern Marianas Islands may have had their historical distinctions but I’d like it to be time to open up the discussion and make time to find the best way to stand together, as one Chamorro people, because that’s who we are. Unu hit.”
Speaker Lawrence Alcairo further stated, “As we prepare for the Festival of the Pacific Arts, we welcome neighboring island cultures to our home, including our brothers and sisters in the CNMI, even though they come from the same people, share the same language, and profess the same cultural beliefs.”
The members of the Guam Youth Congress also discussed Resolution No. 18-30 in response to the string of bomb threats occurring throughout the island. Speaker Alcairo stated, “These bomb threats are not to be taken lightly. They disrupt not only our school system, but also our public safety and everyday living. Those responsible must be held accountable.”
