Youth athletes put on a show

The Senior League's Natibu Tanapag Falcons stand as the national anthem is played during the opening of the 2012 Saipan Little League Baseball last week at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield. (Walter Sutherland)  The CNMI’s deep pool of youth athletes showcased their talents last week.

In the 2012 Saipan Little League Baseball, players from the Junior, Senior, Big, and Major leagues had their debut games at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios and Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Pangelinan ballfields. The JPO Enforcersm Comets, IT&E, and Twins went on to win their opening games.

Over at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi, Tsunami Saipan swimmers Kaito and Ryuto Yanai and Miku Tammy made record-breaking swims in their respective age groups.

At the Garapan Basketball Court, the Unified Basketball Association’s U15 Islander Youth Basketball Tournament took place with Docomo 2 winning the championship against Docomo 4.

At the Marianas High School Gymnasium, Grace Christian Academy took the No. 1 spot in the MISO Girls Volleyball League after downing MHS 1 in its last game of the season. The Lady Eagles finished the regular season with an impressive 11-1 record, absorbing its lone loss at the hands of second-ranked Saipan International School.

Still in MISO competition, the MHS Dolphins improved to a 5-1 record after downing the winless Mt. Carmel (0-8) in the boys varsity caging.

Over at the American Memorial Park tennis courts, champions in the 2012 White Coconut Classic were crowned. Winning their age group divisions were U10’s Robbie and Malika Miyawaki, U12’s Carol Lee and Luther Lizama, U15’s Carl Dela Cruz and Mikayla Lopez, and U18’s Christian Miller and Theecel Minor. In the adults singles, Ken Imaya triumphed in the 40-and-above division, while Jeff Race and Lopez won the men’s and women’s open categories, respectively.

In Tumon, Guam CNMI youth spikers Charnessa Lizama and Toni Yamada prevailed over six other pairs to rule the women’s division of the 2012 Marianas Junior Cup Beach Volleyball Tournament.

Back on Saipan, Marion McKenzie made it two in a row after winning the SBA/Fiji Water February Prince of the Lanes Tournament. In the adults roll-offs, Raphael Zapanta and Diane Camacho won.

In basketball, SCS Heavy Equipment pulled off an overtime win against Smart Cagers to improve to a 3-0 record and take the solo lead in the DLX/Miller Lite caging.
