WWII fallen Carolinians and Chamorros to be honored

For the Carolinians and Chamorros who perished in a war not of their own making, the Marianas Memorial Blessing and Remembrance at the American Memorial Park this Thursday will honor their memory.

The ceremony from 4:30pm to 5:30pm is hosted by the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council.

It occurs 10 years after the first Marianas Memorial commemoration in 2004, and about 70 years after World War II ended in the Pacific.

The memorial, located near the Court of Honor, a memorial for U.S. service members, honors those who lost their lives from the beginning of the aerial bombardment of Saipan in June 1944 to the closing of Camp Susupe in July 1946.

Included in the memorial are the names of all the Marianas war dead.

The list was gathered by the Department of War Claims, the CNMI office of the Washington Representative, the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa, various federal agencies, and the CNMI Historic Preservation Office.

The list was certified by the CNMI government in 2004.

Traditional performances, like kulu blowing, or the summoning of the spirits, and the Hukun I TaoTao Tano Chant will take place before the ceremony.

There will be prayers, a brief candlelight vigil and silent meditation, a wreath laying, and blessing of the monument and a moment of silence.

Light refreshments will be served.
