Garapan Elementary School salvaged its season in the 2014 NMIFA U12 Interscholastic Football League after earning a crucial 3-1 win over William S. Reyes Elementary School in the girls division semis game yesterday at the Hopwood Junior High School Field.

With the victory, Garapan concluded the semis round with a 2-0-1 win-draw-loss record, the same mark WSR and San Vicente Elementary School held. San Vicente, according to coach Alvin Borja, notched its second triumph after a similar 3-1 win against Koblerville Elementary yesterday, while WSR coach Melissa Dickinson provided the unofficial scores in the match between the Kingfishers and Mallards.

With the three teams tied for the top spots and only two advancing to the finals, a tiebreak will be implemented. Unofficially, WSR and Garapan won the tiebreak via goal difference with the Kingfishers getting nine and the Mallards tallying two. San Vicente had one.

The goal difference was the deciding factor in the standoff as the three teams were still even in the head-to-head category. San Vicente won over Garapan (3-0, forfeiture) last Tuesday, while WSR downed San Vicente last Wednesday, 4-0, before Garapan forced the three-way tie with its 3-1 triumph against the Kingfishers.

After dropping its first game in the semis, Garapan came back with a 3-0 thrashing of Koblerville last Wednesday at the Umangs pitch.

Sue Anne Huevos drilled a pair of goals for Garapan, while Vera Hapdei made the other goal to keep the Mallards’ title hopes alive.

Also last Wednesday, WSR shut down San Vicente behind the hat-trick of Katrina Costales. She collected the three goals in successive fashion, while Pauline Grace Joyce recorded the other one. Earlier last Tuesday, Joyce scored four goals in WSR’s 7-0 rout of Koblerville. Costales, Diana Naanep, and Raemna Ramaru contributed one goal apiece.

Meanwhile, the WSR-Garapan title match will be played this Saturday at the 3pm, while San Vicente and Koblerville play in the consolation game at 1:30pm.

In the boys division, it will be Saipan International School against WSR and the finals will also take place at 3pm on the other pitch at Hopwood. SIS topped the semis with an unbeaten 3-0-0 record, as it downed WSR in the yesterday’s game, 3-1. WSR finished at second with its 2-0-1 card, recording its first two wins against Dandan Middle School and Koblerville.
