CNMI Junior Team member Ji Min Woo had a fruitful stint in the opening week of the 7th Annual Tan Holdings Tennis Classic as he brought home two juniors championships.
Woo first notched the boys U12 doubles crown with Daniel Kang after they defeated Rintaro Miyawaki and Richard Steele, 6-1, 6-2, in the finals last Sunday at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan tennis courts. Woo and Kang made it to the title match after blanking siblings Bekcham and Ravi Richards, 6-0, 6-0. The Richards marched into the semis following a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Conrad Bao and Jaehoon Son at the top half of the draw.
At the lower half, Miyawaki and Steele eased past Min Jin Cho and Seung Won Lee, 6-0, 6-0, to barge into the finals. Cho and Lee earlier ousted Andrew Chung and Min Gi Jung, 6-4, 7-5, to arrange a semis duel against Miyawaki and Steele and they went on to finish in the Top 3 after prevailing against the Richards, 6-2, 2-2 (retired).
In the boys U12 singles, Woo won the battle between the Top 2 seeds in the division. Woo, who is seeded first in the draw, clinched the singles crown after outclassing the second-ranked Seung Jin Paik, 6-0, 6-4.
Woo, placed only third in last year’s tournament, boosted his chances for a better finish this year after beating topping Chris Kim in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-0, and crushing Guam’s Roman Merletti in the semis, 6-0, 6-2. Paik, on the other hand, lorded it over Min Jin Cho, 6-0, 6-0, and Kang, 6-2, 6-1, to force a finals showdown against Woo.
Meanwhile, Carol Lee ruled the co-ed U18 singles division after winning over Luther Lizama, 6-4, 6-2, and Colin Ramsey, 6-1, 6-2. Lizama finished second following his 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ramsey in the round-robin contest.
