Woo clinches boys U16 title
Ji Min Woo swept Sean Lee in the finals, 6-0, 6-2, to earn the boys U16 singles title in the 19th Pacific Islands Club Tennis Championships yesterday at the PIC Saipan hard court.
Woo defeated two other opponents in straight sets to rule the division. The No. 1 seed first eased past Eugene Park, 6-1, 6-1, to make it to the semifinals. Park set up a quarterfinal game against Woo following a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Daniel Heo. Then in the semis, Woo downed Sam Ryu, 6-2, 6-3, to notch the first finals berth at the upper half of the draw. Ryu before bowing to Woo, posted a 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 victory over Andy Kim—a 6-3, 6-4 winner against Jun Wang in the earlier round of the top half of field.
At the bottom half, Lee drew a bye in the opener and marched into the finals after eliminating Richard Steele, 6-3, 6-1, and Daniel Kang, 6-2, 7-5. Steele won over Gang Min, 6-4, 6-4, to arrange a quarterfinal duel against Lee, while Kang prevailed over Isaac Heo, 6-3, 6-0, to earn a semis spot. Heo, earlier, slipped past Maria Gregoire, 3-6, 6-4, 10-2, for a Round of 8 meeting against Kang.
Meanwhile, Hyen Jin Elliot won the round-robin girls U14 singles event after going unbeaten in two games.
Elliot first topped Serin Chung last Friday, 6-1, 6-3, and then secured the sweep after outclassing Helen Kim last Sinday, 7-5, 6-0. Kim settled for the runner-up honors, as she earlier survived Chung in an extended game, 6-1, 4-6, 10-7.
In other results, Juncheol Hwang and Nason Wessel advanced to the finals of the boys U12 singles.
Hwang bagged the finals ticket at the upper half of the draw after ousting Wataru Kadokura, 6-1, 6-1. Kadokura moved into the semis following a 6-3, 7-6 win over Takeru Jim. Wessel also needed only two sets to down Jun Yu, 6-0, 6-0, and enter the finals. Wessel earlier zoomed past Vlad Van Der Maas in the first round, 6-2, 6-0, and was scheduled to duel Hwang in the finals yesterday, but results of their match were unavailable as off press time.
