CNMI swimmer Rezne Wong is aiming to finish the 2011-2012 NCCA season with a bang as he competes in the Mountain Pacific Swimming Federation Swimming Championships starting tomorrow in California.
“Our last NCAA competition will be the MPSF Swimming Championships. We will be competing against eight other schools. I will be swimming the 200 IM, the 400 IM, and the 200 breaststroke,” said the junior member of the University of Hawaii-Manoa swim team when asked for updates about his competitions.
The MPSF meet will run from Feb. 15 to 18 at the East East Los Angeles Community College, in Monterey Park and will also feature swimmers from Air Force, BYU Cal State (Bakersfield), UNLV, North Dakota, Pacific, Seattle, and Wyoming.
“It will be two times as competitive as last year, as we had just three other teams to compete against. This year it is eight other teams, in a smaller, crowded pool, and with much more competitors. It will be much different, but we will give every race everything we got. We have been training hard and we hope to have a Top 3 finish, if not first. UNLV, Air Force, and BYU are the Top 3 contenders,” the 2010 Micronesian Games Most Outstanding Male Athlete said.
“My personal goals are to at least make the Top 16 in all three of my events, if not the Top 8. To be in the Top 8 will be spectacular, given the amount of talented athletes from every school. My goal times are 1:49, 3:59, and 1:59 respectively,” Wong added.
Wong’s personal best in the 200yard IM is 1:51.02 (2/23/2011), while his PBs in the 400yd individual medley and 200yd breaststroke read at 4:03.22 (2/23/2011) and 2:01.92 (2/23/2011), respectively.
Before the tournament in California, Wong and company hosted Wisconsin and won the pre-conference meet. He placed second in the 200yd breaststroke (2:05.64), third in the 200yd medley relay (1:34.13), and fourth in the 100yd breaststroke (59.51 seconds).
