A woman arrested in Guam on Friday for allegedly engaging in sex trafficking on Saipan is expected any time today, Monday, or this week to be taken to the U.S. District Court for the NMI for her initial court appearance.

A check on Friday at district court showed there was no hearing yet for Chang Ru Meng Backman, who is facing three charges of sex trafficking and three counts of alien smuggling.

The Pacific Daily News reported that according to court documents, Backman operated Holiday Night Club, a karaoke bar located in Chalan Kanoa, where three Chinese women were allegedly duped into working as prostitutes.

The three women allegedly came to Saipan in August 2008 to work at a hotel or farm, but were instead employed at Backman’s brothel.

The women allegedly entered Saipan using only visitor entry permits.

The indictment was filed in the U.S. District Court for the NMI on Tuesday, according to Guam reports.

In December 2009, Backman’s car was burglarized and her Louis Vuitton bag was stolen. The suspect was subsequently convicted and sentenced to 14 days in prison in January 2011.
