Wiseman bangs gavel for last time
Judiciary holds retirement ceremony today
Wiseman
Associate Judge David A. Wiseman yesterday banged the gavel for the last time after serving the bench for 15 years, making him the longest to serve as associate judge of the CNMI Superior Court.
“It’s sad. It’s closing a significant chapter of my life,” the 74-year-old Wiseman told Saipan Tribune.
After presiding over a hearing in a criminal case in the morning and a civil case in the afternoon, Wiseman announced that it was the last criminal and civil cases calendar that he handles after 15 years of service on the bench.
Attorneys James Sirok, Joseph E. Horey, Robert Myers, and Joe Hill, who were in the courtroom for the proceedings, approached Wiseman and sent their best wishes.
Wiseman came to the CNMI in 1977, while Hill arrived in 1979.
Wiseman and his wife are now staying in Hawaii. He said if the CNMI Judiciary needs his service, he will visit to do mediation.
The Judiciary will hold today, Friday, a special proceeding for Wiseman’s retirement at the CNMI Supreme Court at 10:30am.
Wiseman is the 15th judge to serve the Commonwealth Judiciary. He also served the people of the CNMI as a designated judge of the U.S. District Court for the NMI for 14 consecutive years.
He spent more than 38 years of his career in the CNMI.
Wiseman began work in the Commonwealth as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer, serving the pre-Commonwealth government of Rota.
He served the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd CNMI Legislature as legal counsel and the 5th and 11th as a committee counsel. He represented several government agencies as a private attorney, while simultaneously serving as a special judge for several years.
