WIA participants complete basic work skills, computer training
Fourteen individuals from the Workforce Investment Agency were recently recognized by the Northern Marianas College for successfully completing courses in the fields of workforce development and computer literacy through the Community Development Institute.
“The courses that CDI offered for this training were designed to help individuals develop valuable knowledge and learn practical skills they would need to succeed in the local workforce,” said CDI program manager Les Ogumoro-Uludong.
These courses included “Workplace Culture & Etiquette,” “Stress Management,” “Communication in the Workplace” and “Introduction to Word Processing Applications.” Courses facilitated by CDI are geared around actual workforce needs and experiences, and are developed based on course surveys, community needs assessments, and interviews with employers.
CDI is a program under the college’s Administration division that has been continually offering specialized courses and customized trainings in order to meet both the professional development and personal enrichment needs of the community.
The 14 participants were the 13th cohort from WIA to be awarded certificates of competence from CDI. WIA is a federal program designed to meet the needs of businesses, job seekers, and others who want to further their careers through assistance in employment and education training.
After completing the courses at NMC, many of the participants are referred to businesses and agencies in both the public and private sector for job interviews and possible job placement as work trainees.
