The students of Whispering Palms School spent two school days on Managaha Island as part of an annual tradition where they learn during the day and camp at night.
From the youngest students, aged 4, to the oldest students, aged 15, are mixed into multi-level groups to encourage cooperation between grade levels and ages.
The typical classes of English, math, science, and social studies were replaced by instruction in sand art, beading, and pictures from natural items.
Students also conducted a digital scavenger hunt, were introduced to ukulele performance, and participated in cooperative games.
The students listened as Janelle, a biologist from the Division of Fish & Wildlife, discussed sea turtles and sea life.
The annual Managaha trip is a Whispering Palms tradition that goes back decades. A continuing tradition also has parents volunteering their time to help out with hauling materials, donating food, cooking meals, and doing the legwork to make the trip work efficiently.
Thursday night was dedicated to sitting on the beach and singing songs together. Some students volunteered to play songs that they learned in ukulele class. Afterward, the students enjoyed a game of flashlight tag.
Students brought their own tents and set them up, staying either with friends or family. Students camped overnight with the WPS staff and parents, and had the option of camping on Friday night at their discretion.
