Westco pulled off a come-from-behind victory over Mobil/COAG, 68-62, in the second game in the JEM Company Ltd./Mobil Customer Appreciation Basketball League last Tuesday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.
Down by 17 at the break, 24-41, Westco overhauled the deficit in the third period after holding Mobil/COAG to 5 points. On offense, Raymond Tolentino and Dan Illahi teamed up in bringing Westco back into the game with the former scoring 11 points—9 of them came from downtown—and the latter adding 10 for the squad’s 55-46 advantage.
Mobil/COAG lost the double-digit lead in the penultimate quarter as it made only two field goals and a free throw. Jomar Manzano and Alvin Almario knocked in the two baskets in Mobil/COAG’s meltdown in the third period.
In the fourth canto, Westco continued to have the driver’s seat with Tolentino’s free throws in the homestretch ensuring the team’s third win in four games in Pool B. Tolentino added 8 more points in the final period, including three charities.
Meanwhile, in another Pool B pairing, Coca-Cola/Subway banked on Michael Cabanas’ fourth-quarter explosion to beat D&Q/CTSI.
Cabanas fired 14 points in the final canto to lift his team to the 15-point winning margin. Coca-Cola/Subway started the fourth ahead by just single digits, 53-45, before pulling away behind Cabanas’ successive baskets. The Coca-Cola/Subway gunner scored the squad’s last 9 points to give his team its fourth victory in five matches.
D&Q/CTSI fell to a 1-2 record.
