Wado-Kai Karatedo Saipan is offering free trial lessons for interested students tonight at 7pm at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Japan’s Fumiyasu Ishiguro and Yurie Mori will instruct the lessons along with sensei Eiichi Ishiguro.

Eiichi Ishigoru is a seven-Dan master of the martial art.

The Dan ranking system is a Japanese mark of level that is used in modern martial arts. Seven-Dan, or Nandan, is equivalent to a seventh degree black belt; the Japanese system goes up to 10-Dan (Judan).

Fumiyasu Ishiguro is the 1998 Wado-Kai Euoopean Kumite Champion, while Mori holds titles as the 2009 Japan Champion Team Kumite and 2010 Wado-Kai World Kumite champions in addition to being a 2011 Japan national team member.

Kumite translates to “sparring” and represent one of the three main staples of karate training, the other two being kihon and kata.

Kihon includes the basics or fundamentals of Karate, while kata translates to “form” and describes how students practice detailed choreographed patterns of movements.

In addition, a second free trial lesson will be held at Himawari on Thursday at 6:30pm.

The dojo is offering lessons for $20 for the first month, after which the lessons will be listed at its standard $30 monthly rate.

Following the trial period, lessons are being offered on Tuesdays and Fridays at Ada Gym from 6:30pm to 7:30pm and then again from 7:40pm to 8:40pm.

Lessons will also be offered at Himawari on Mondays and Thursdays from 5:40pm to 6:40pm and from 6:50pm to 7:50pm.

For reservations or more information, call 233-9856 or 287-9856; walk-ins are welcome as well.
