Volunteers made a helpful contribution to the CNMI beach volleyball community by rehabilitating the sand courts of the Hyatt Regency Saipan last weekend.
Former national team coach Russ Quinn, multisport athlete Tyce Mister, Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association board member Sean Frink, and Chris Nelson were the volunteers that spruced up the sand court.
NMIVA president Laurie Peterka thanked the four volunteers who helped restore the Hyatt sand court to its original form.
The quartet used a rototiller, a machine that has rotating blades used for tilling the soil, since hard spots had already formed on the sand court. The rototiller broke up the hard spots on the court.
They also replaced the wooden dowels in both nets and at the same time reset the anchors that hold the lines on the courts.
Peterka added that the volunteers replaced the attachment cables and hardware for the nets, while also adding new tension lines to keep the net stretched tight.
Quinn and company also put additional sand at the center of the court to keep the middle portion flat with NMIVA providing the activities and court maintenance materials.
Quinn will also run a beach volleyball clinic for adults with a four-week lesson plan for $25.
All proceeds of the clinic will go to NMIVA and a portion of it would also support the maintenance program at the Hyatt sand courts.
The maintenance of the Hyatt sand courts is just right in time for NMIVA’s beach volleyball tournament set on Dec. 27.
Peterka said the tournament will either be held at the Hyatt or at the Fiesta Resort & Spa beachfront sand courts.
She added that more information will be released days before the opening of the tournament, which will be NMIVA’s final event for 2015.
