VOICES to host summer camp
The VOICES of the CNMI Tinian Chapter joins the ADA National Network in celebrating 27th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The organization, in collaboration with Team Koka, will also be having its annual summer camp tomorrow, July 29, 2017, at the Kammer Beach main pavilion, from 10am to 7:30pm.
The camp will raise awareness of disabilities, safety issues, underage drinking and tobacco use, and what to expect during emergencies.
Registration is limited to the first 100 participants. Register by contacting Monika H. Diaz at 783-0591 or Janeth Barcinas at Tinian Elementary and Tracy Sanchez at Tinian High School.
The ADA was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990.
The ADA and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 give civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to other individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion.
The ADA and ADAAA also assure equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities for access to businesses, employment, transportation, state and local government programs and services, and telecommunications.
The VOICES of the CNMI – Tinian has been very visible in the community and hopes to see change in public facilities, businesses, government agencies, and others in providing accommodations for people with disabilities. The organization also hopes that the people will accept and respect the needs of people with disabilities. We want to see that these individuals participate fully in the community.
The three things that this nonprofit organization hopes to see soon are accessible play areas, incorporating the ADA standards of accessible design in public facilities, and access to beaches. (PR)
