Visiting boxer rules Silver Streak race

An amateur boxer from Nevada pulled off a surprise win in the 19th Annual Tom Picarro “Silver Streak” Memorial Fun Run held last Saturday.
Daniel Ramirez was the first overall finisher of the 4.2-mile race, timing in at 29:45 and beating home favorite Michael Mancao (30:11).
“It was a good run, I was with the second placer (Mancao) the whole time and then left him maybe in the last one kilometer of the race,” said Ramirez, who broke away from Mancao near Mobil gas station in Garapan.
The 19-year-old boxer is on Saipan to train with Trench Tech. He has been on the island for about a week and will stay here until September.
“My training also includes running, so it was good that I was able to join this race and win it, too,” said the super flyweight boxer, who was no stranger to road running.
“I competed in long distance races in Nevada and I started running since I was in grade school,” added Ramirez, who holds a personal best time of 2:50:26 in marathon.
Joining Ramirez and Mancao in the Top 3 in the men’s division was Ronald Villafria, who came in late for the race, but still crossed the finish line in front of the DFS Galleria entrance (Joeten Garapan traffic lights) just 45 seconds behind Mancao and ahead of more than 30 male runners.
Villafria said by the time he was done with the registration, the lead pack was already near the traffic lights in front of Bank of Guam.
In the women’s division, Mieko Carey topped the field with a time of 32:53. Completing the Top 3 were Amalia Harris (35:41) and Hinumi Haniguchi (36:17).
Over 80 runners joined the weekend race that started and ended at the DFS entrance and brought participants to as far the World War II Tanks at Quartermaster Road. The event also doubled as a fundraiser for Hand in Hand in Haiti, a project that DFS supports and aims to build educational facility for children in the Caribbean country that was hit by a catastrophic earthquake in 2010.
