With virtual races now the new norm at this time of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Saipan Unity Lions Club will follow the lead as it holds its 4th Annual Mountain and Road Bike Ride on Oct. 10 and 11.
Eva Cuevas, SLUC’s Marketing and Communications chair, said that bikers will be on their own when they join next month’s race and will have to use the STRAVA app to record their times and determine the event’s winners. Race course, divisions, registration fees, and other details of the competition will be announced later, as SULC is still coordinating with the bikers’ group to finalize the mechanics of the tournament.
The SULC 4th Annual Mountain and Road Bike Ride is a fundraiser with the organizing group using the proceeds from the event to fund its various community projects and services.
“Majority of the funds that will be raised from this bike race event will be used for our Feed The Hungry campaign, as it is the kind of support that our community needs at these extremely tough times. Portion of the funds to be collected in this event will also be used for other projects and services provided by our club in the CNMI as the needs arise,” Cuevas said.
Next month’s event will be the second virtual competition for CNMI bikers, as they just completed the Guam-hosted Go The Distance Challenge after joining the 100-mile race.
