Village debris removal to commence soon

Share

In the coming days, a multi-departmental group of debris removal specialists will be entering villages around Saipan with the intent of clearing any debris within residential areas left behind by the devastation of Typhoon Soudelor.

The team, composed of staff from agencies such as the Saipan Mayor’s Office, the Department of Public Works, and the Department of Lands and Natural Resources are working to get residents prepared to set aside all debris that each of them accumulated as part of cleanup efforts after Soudelor battered the island with near 100-mph winds, leaving most of the island scarred and littered with storm-related refuse.

Crews are looking at a tentative date of Sept. 15, 2015, to commence the project. Depending on circumstances, organizers stated that despite this being designated as the start date, the task may start either earlier or later. As the date nears, workers are stressing to the general public that should they need their storm-related debris picked up, they must adhere to the following guidelines:

• Due to government vehicles not being allowed to enter private property without domiciliary consent, residents are asked to place debris alongside the right of way portion of their village streets.
• Residents are also asked to separate debris into three categories:
Green waste and vegetation (Tree limbs, stumps, shrubs etc.)
Metal-based debris (tin, aluminum siding, etc.)

Treated wood/lumber
• No household waste will be picked up by the team that is not related to storm cleanup.
• If debris is not segregated into the above-mentioned categories, cleanup crews will not dispose of them.

This project is being undertaken in coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Should residents need more information on village debris removal, they are urged to contact the:

• Saipan Mayor’s Office at 234-6208
• Department of Public Works (Solid Waste Management Division) at 322-2745 or 2760
• Department of Lands and Natural Resources (Parks & Recreation) at 234-1791 (Joint Information Center)
