Veteran pair delivers in Sun Palace tourney

The veteran tandem of Sam Jones and Glenn Bluutjens outclassed the youthful duo of Jordan Pangilinan and Ezekiel Macario in last Friday’s men’s doubles A game in the Sun Palace Hotel Singles and Doubles Badminton Competition 2014 at the TSL Sports Complex.

The two Saipan Badminton Club members swept Community Badminton Club’s Pangilinan and Macario, but sweated it out in all two games, pulling off a 21-18 in the opener and eking out a 21-17 triumph in the second.

Nine other pairs joined Jones and Bluutjens in the win column last Friday.

In the men’s doubles B, it was the turn of youth players Deether Edralin and J.P. Nopia to prevail against Jojo Savellano and Narlou Achas. The Community Badminton Club pair bagged a 21-18 win in the first game and had a tougher time in the second, eking out a 21-20 victory. Achas and Savellano played twice last Friday and also lost to Aries Cordero and Chris Hilario, who needed only two games to beat their foes, 21-13, 21-14.

In the men’s doubles C, Taga Badminton Club’s A.J. Ortega and partner and Han Cheol Yu and Jong Min Lee gained free victories after wining via defaults against the pairs of Panapa Peteru and Che and Jeremi Montenejo and John Cano, respectively. Also winning via walkover was the team of Rowena Sison and Sally Hongsin Im, who was supposed to meet Havikka Farro and Mykki Caracut in the women’s doubles B tiff at 6am.

After forfeiting their first match, Farro and Caracut showed up in their second and last game for the day, but lost to Alma Ortega and Dianne Francisco. The two Saipan Badminton Club players eased past Farro and Caracut in the first game, 21-8, and also completed the sweep with a 21-16 victory in the second.

Three other women’s doubles matches were played last Friday with Marlou Malasarte and Marlene Pereja, Toshiko Obata and Windy Fernandez, and Gigi Zapanta and Lani Santos winning over separate foes. Malasarte and Peraja wee paired against Jen Savellano and Janelle Pangilinan and pulled off a 21-14, 9-21, 21-20 win in their women’s doubles A duel. In the women’s doubles B, Obata and Fernandez made short work of Loyda Ito and Shirley Kim, 21-10, 21-11. Zapanta and Santos played in doubles C and rallied past Tina Lee and Hongsin Im, 19-21, 21-16, 21-13.

In the women’s singles division, Savellano topped Malasarte in Class A, 21-18, 21-18, while her doubles partner Pangilinan defeated Lanie Bartolome, 21-16, 21-13. In Class B matches, Obata dominated Marylyn Montano, 21-9, 21-15, while Francisco triumphed over Lucelle Lampera, 21-16, 21-13. In the Class C tiff, Patricia Abantao first downed Zapanta, 21-8, 21-8, before bowing to Nicole Malasarte, 15-21, 10-21.

In the men’s singles, only two matches were set last Friday with Jexler Caranto prevailing in Class A and Pangilinan winning in Class B. Caranto swept Young Sang Yu, 21-16, 21-16, while Pangilinan outlasted Macario in three games, 18-21, 21-15, 21-16.
