Various renovations made to the Oleai Sports Complex and the grand opening of the Gillette Multi-purpose Gymnasium in Gualo Rai took place in 2011.
With hopes of hosting the 2017 Pacific Mini-Games, renovations were made to Oleai’s Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium and its neighboring Miguel “Tan Ge” Pangelinan and Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfields.
The Oleai repairs were funded under the Community Development Block Grant.
The gym can now hold up to 1,000 spectators as workers installed new retractable bleachers.
They also fixed the leaks in the roof and added nine new turbines designed to increase circulation and cool off the inside of the building.
Both the front entrance restrooms and the locker rooms also received some much needed maintenance and brand new synthetic rubber floor panels were installed for basketball and volleyball games.
Back in May some fencing was replaced at the Tan Ge field and bleachers were installed along Tan Ko’s left field fence.
The Tan Siu Lin Sports Complex also opened in June and offers badminton, basketball, and indoor soccer activities.
It is the home of the Northern Marianas Badminton Association, which hosted the IT&E Singles/Doubles tournament and the Saipan Soccer School’s Futsal League which opened in mid-July.
It was also the venue for a number of basketball events including the 3rd Annual Shirley’s Basketball Cup¸ United Filipino Organization’s Inter-Organization Basketball Friendship League’s Youth and Master Division Docomo Pacific Cup, Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League’s U15 and U18 divisions, the TSL Women’s Summer Basketball League, and the Coalition of Private Schools Sports Association high school basketball league.
