USS Chicago to hold change of command
SANTA RITA, Guam—Cmdr. Brian Turney will relieve Cmdr. Lance Thompson as commanding officer of the Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine USS Chicago (SSN 721) during a ceremony at the Naval Base Guam theater May 12.
Capt. Jeffrey Grimes, commander, Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 15 will be the guest speaker for the ceremony.
Thompson has commanded Chicago for approximately three years during which, Chicago completed eight Combined Task Force 74 operational periods, nine exercises, three theater anti-submarine warfare periods, five foreign port visits and ten foreign port stops for personnel. Thompson and his crew completed Operation Heavy Thunder for Commander, 7th Fleet last month, demonstrating key tactical and strategic warfighting capabilities and returned from national tasking May 8.
Thompson was selected for promotion to captain and will head to SUBRON 15 as their senior deputy commander following Chicago’s change of command.
Chicago was commissioned Sept. 27, 1986, and is the Navy’s 34th Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine. Measuring 360 feet long and displacing more than 6,900 tons, Chicago has a crew of approximately 140 Sailors and is capable of supporting various missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, strike warfare, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
Chicago is a member of SUBRON 15, which is located at Polaris Point, in Piti, Guam. CSS-15 staff is responsible for providing training, material and personnel readiness support of four Los Angeles-class attack submarines stationed in Guam. The submarines and submarine tenders USS Frank Cable (AS 40) and USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) are maintained as part of the U.S. Navy’s forward-deployed submarine force and are readily capable of meeting global operational requirements.
