Seventeen people were sworn in as U.S. citizens during a naturalization ceremony in the U.S. District Court for the NMI on Monday, which had Ruth Coleman, administrative specialist and coordinator for the U.S. Department of Veteran Health Administration, as the guest speaker.

The new American citizens are Gilda E. Abalos, Delia A. Acera, Angela V. Aldan, Pipit S. Ball, Charlie A. Borja, Ryan John M.L. Cabrera, Kristine A.D. Galang, Shanjib K. Halder, Ruel Q. Ibarra, Nolie R. Labadan, Grace P. Moran, Renea D. Raho, Norman A. Redor, Jeremiah R. Rother, Shyaralyn L. San Nicolas, Nenita C. Ta, and Roel G.C. Vinluan.

In her speech, Coleman said that “migrants and refugees revitalize and renew America,” and urged the new Americans to do good for themselves, know the communities they live in, and get involved and volunteer so that they and the community can grow and thrive economically.

It was Immigration Services Officer Patricia Phelan who presented the new U.S. citizens to the court.

Coleman shared that Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona has previously tried to get her as a guest speaker for naturalization ceremonies for many years, but was unable to attend due to the busy nature of her work. “Finally I accepted [the offer to be guest speaker], and I can say that it was a privilege and a great honor to have done it; I’m very grateful. We welcome our new citizens,” said Coleman.
