UOG to host baseball clinic on Saipan
Alcantara
The University of Guam will be holding a two-day baseball clinic at the Capitol Hill Softball Field this coming Thursday, May 26, and Friday, May 27, from 5pm to 8pm.
Triton Baseball Team head coach Roke Alcantara said “Summer 2022 Baseball Clinics” is open to high school students ages 16 years old and above. He added that aside from hosting the baseball clinic, they’re also looking for players to attend UOG and to be a part of their sports teams and programs.
“Our Athletic Department here at UOG would like to extend our efforts to educate and possibly offer opportunities for young adults in the NMI to further their education and play for UOG Athletics whether it’s baseball or any other sports we have to offer…[we’re looking for] hardworking and passionate ball players,” he said.
Alcantara said those interested in joining the baseball clinics will have to bring their own baseball equipment. He added that the first 25 who sign up get to take home for free a limited edition Triton Athletics T-shirt plus other prizes.
Saipan Baseball League president Jay Santos encouraged the islands’ youth baseball players to attend the baseball clinic hosted by UOG.
“I’m very pleased to see representatives from the University of Guam Tritons Baseball Team will come to Saipan to conduct a baseball clinic and possibly recruit players for their squad. I’ve always been a proponent of furthering education and if some of our youth can do so with baseball then all the better. We’ve seen a number of our baseball players move to the mainland to play baseball and go to college. We have some very talented baseball players and SBL hopes to provide more opportunities in the near future. Thank you very much to the UOG Tritons and we appreciate you taking the time to come to Saipan,” he said.
Saipan Little League Baseball Association vice president A.J. Murig, meanwhile, thanked Alcantara and the rest of his staff in the UOG Triton Baseball Team for holding the baseball clinic on island.
“I want to thank coach Roke and his staff for having this clinic here on Saipan for our youths to participate in, gain some skills, and most importantly learn about the opportunities that UOG and the Triton family have to offer. As you know, we have many, many talented and skilled players here on Saipan that have gone to further their education and at the same time continue with their baseball careers in college and this is a great opportunity for our youths that plan to continue on to college and further their careers in baseball.”
Public School System Athletic Programs director Nick Gross joined Santos and Murig’s call for the CNMI’s youth to take advantage of this opportunity not only to improve their baseball skills but also possibly get a free college education in the process.
“After more than four years going without baseball in the CNMI, the opportunity presented by UOG for our student athletes to continue their education and pursue collegiate athletics is huge! I look forward to strengthening our partnership and creating more options for student athletes throughout the CNMI!”
