UOG student gets scholarship for Japan
University of Guam student Kristine Tuazon was recently selected by the Japanese government to receive a full scholarship to graduate school at Sophia University in Tokyo. Tuazon will graduate this May from UOG with a double major in Japanese Studies and Art.
Tuazon was selected for this highly competitive scholarship after testing and interviewing with the Japanese government. She was supported throughout the application process by UOG professor of Japanese Dr. Toyoko Kang.
“Kristine is an outstandingly studious, hard working student…. Almost every semester Tuazon takes six courses here at the University of Guam, but she is a type of student who does not miss any assignments,” Kang wrote in a letter of recommendation. “Kristine is a sweet, highly self-motivated student that every instructor wants to have in his/her class. I am very lucky to have her in my classes.”
Tuazon will begin her studies in Japan this fall as a research student and hopes to earn her Ph.D. while in Japan.
“The entire thing seems like a miracle,” Tuazon says. “Imagine all the things that had to line up for me to be able to accept this scholarship. It’s really amazing when you think about it.”
Tuazon, encourages other UOG students to apply for the scholarship. Applications are due one year before the student plans to graduate. The program does not require any specific area of study, but Tuazon said it is helpful if you have a good background in the Japanese language. (UOG)
