UOG Regional Sustainability Conference on April 15-16
The University of Guam Center for Island Sustainability will host its 5th Regional Conference on Island Sustainability on April 15–16, 2014, at the Hyatt Regency Guam.
The two-day conference’s theme is “Concept to Implementation: Achieving a Sustainable Community.” Topics covered will include sustainable environments; climate change and energy; sustainable land use and regional management; technical innovations for sustainable production and consumption; leadership for sustainable development; entrepreneurial opportunities for sustainable solutions; and corporate social responsibility.
“There is a lot to offer at this year’s conference: an excellent lineup of speakers, engaging workshops, and an exhibit filled with dedicated organizations and companies, and plenty of opportunities for networking,” said Dr. John Peterson, assistant vice president and UOG Center for Island Sustainability director.
The keynote speaker for the conference is Ronald Jumeau, Seychelles Ambassador for Climate Change and Small Island Developing States issues. Jumeau started his career as a journalist and later became chief editor of the Seychelles Nation daily newspaper before he became Secretary to the Cabinet in the Office of the President of Seychelles and also served as Seychelles Minister for Environment and Natural Resources. In 2007, Jumeau was assigned to New York as the Seychelles Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ambassador to the United States, Canada, Brazil, Cuba and several Caribbean islands until 2012 when he became a globe-trotting activist for the survival of his and other island nations.
“Ambassador Jumeau is a respected global leader. His work over the years has elevated the issues of the impacts to climate change on small developing islands at the international levels,” said UOG president Dr. Robert A. Underwood.
