Volume 5 of the University of Guam’s Humanities and Social Science peer reviewed journal, Pacific Asia Inquiry: Multidisciplinary Perspectives, has been published and is now available on the UOG website at www.uog.edu/pai.

Edited by Nicholas J. Goetzfridt, this volume includes historical perspectives on U.S. Naval rule on Guam, Chamorro “adaptive resistance” on Guam through indigenous roles as mayors and other officers during the Spanish administration of the island, and a detailed, illustrated survey and analysis of the Spanish network of lookout points for galleons and other ships approaching Guam.

Also included are papers on the historical and contemporary heritage of Filipino identities on Guam and the traditions and practices of the Yo’åmte healing practitioner.  Studies on the South Pacific based short stories of Louis Becke and the conflicting dynamics between Japanese travel Journalist Kanetaka Kaoru ‘s impressions of native women of Fiji and Papua New Guinea and indigenous realities conclude the volume.  Several book reviews are also included.  Papers are preceded by a note/essay by Dr. Goetzfridt titled “Imperative Thoughts.”
