University of Guam president Dr. Robert A. Underwood presents the first speaker in the Presidential Lecture Series of 2014, Dr. Hendrik Luesch, the Debbie and Sylvia DeSantis Chair in Natural Products Drug Discovery and Development, Center for Natural Products, Drug Discovery and Developmen, Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Florida.
Luesch will speak on Guam’s marine life and resources as a starting point for drug discovery and development. His research has identified promising compounds for combating cancer, as well as Alzheimer’s disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The presentation will be held at 5:30pm on Thursday, April 10, at the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Lecture Hall at the University of Guam.

About Dr. Luesch

Hendrik Luesch received his Diplom in Chemistry at the University of Siegen (Germany) in 1997.  He studied marine natural products chemistry at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa where he obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 2002 under the guidance of Prof. Richard E. Moore.

In 2005, he joined the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Florida.  In 2011, he was awarded the three-year University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship and, in 2012, the endowed Frank A. Duckworth Eminent Scholar Chair in Drug Research and Development.

As of 2013, he is the endowed Debbie and Sylvia DeSantis Chair in Natural Products Drug Discovery and Development where he leads a multidisciplinary marine natural products drug discovery and development program.  In 2013, he founded and now directs the Center for Natural Products, Drug Discovery and Development (CNPD3) at the University of Florida.
