United: We provide resident fares
United Airlines has clarified that it provides a different fare rate for CNMI and Guam residents and it can be accessed simply by changing one’s location on the airline’s website, www.united.com.
Last week, CNMI residents raised concerns about the recent increase in United Airlines’ fares from Saipan to Guam. A recent statement from United Corporate Communications attempts to clarify the matter.
“In general, fares vary depending on many factors such as travel demand, travel dates, seasonality, and others. United offers Guam and Northern Mariana Islands resident fares. These fares can be accessed by updating your location on United’s website (united.com) to Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands, or by visiting your local travel agency or the Guam United City Ticket Office. We continue to try to offer a variety of fares to meet the demand of our customers,” said United.
You can change your location by clicking the globe icon at the top right side of United’s website before searching for flights.
Saipan Tribune did this and found that once changing the location to “Northern Mariana Islands,” fare rates from Saipan to Guam dropped tremendously from around $600 to $380 for a roundtrip ticket.
In addition, the CNMI still has other options with commercial carriers like Marianas Southern Airways and Star Marianas.
Currently, Marianas Southern Airways provides daily flights from Saipan to Guam, five days a week, staring at $99.
Currently, Star Marianas provides daily air service from Rota to Guam at around $130.
