United to run 3 charter flights to Iwo Jima
GUAM—United Airlines announced yesterday that it will operate three charter flights between its Guam hub and Iwo Jima, Japan, on Saturday, March 21, 2015, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. More than 30 World War II veterans will be among the group of 400 passengers who will make visits to Mount Suribachi and the landing beaches of Iwo Jima.
Sam Shinohara, United’s managing director of Business Development Asia/Pacific, said, “This commemoration is very special, as we mark 70 years since the Battle of Iwo Jima with some of the brave servicemen who stormed those beaches during World War II. We typically operate a single charter flight for this annual commemoration; however, given the interest in and significance of the 70th anniversary, the charter was increased to three flights. United is proud to support our veterans and join them in honoring comrades who lost their lives on these hallowed battlefields.”
While in the Pacific, the group will also visit historical points of interest in Guam, Saipan, Tinian and the Republic of Palau. United will host a reception to welcome the charter group when they arrive in Guam, featuring refreshments and local entertainment. United will also provide operational support throughout the tour, in cooperation with the U.S. Marine Corps, Japan Self-Defense Force, Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, U.S. departments of Justice, State, Immigration and Customs, the Quarantine Office, and others.
