Unanswered question

Last month, your newspaper was kind enough to publish my letter concerning the Retirement Program. I asked Sen. Ray Yumul to explain why he authored Public Law 15-15 that stopped the government/employer contribution to the Retirement Fund, which led to the 25-percent cut in the pension of our retirees. He never responded, which is very disappointing.

However, there were other sponsors of the legislation. Then-speaker Oscar M. Babauta was one. So, this time I want to ask him the same question I asked Sen. Yumul in my March 17, 2014, letter to the editor. Like Sen. Yumul, because of your action Rep. Babauta, our retirees are suffering.

As with Sen. Yumul, don’t you think the retirees deserve an explanation? The bill was never referred to a committee, no public hearing held, and there was no committee report prepared. Not a single retiree was asked how they felt about it. Had there been a committee report it would probably contain answers to my questions so that I don’t have to be writing these letters. Like all the retirees, all I want is an explanation.

My question is simple. Why did you and Sen. Yumul sponsor this bill and voted to stop the employer contribution to the Retirement Fund? I am a very simple person, so please make me understand in simple plain English why.

If I don’t hear from you, I will be writing to everyone who voted for the bill hoping one of you steps forward with an explanation.
