UFO to join Liberation Day float contest
Float committee chair Leo Cañedo said yesterday that the network of some 30 Filipino organizations in the CNMI submitted their participation form to the Saipan Mayor’s Office on Tuesday.
The group began working on their float entry last night in Susupe based on this year’s theme, “Enlightening Our Culture, Courage, Freedom, & Unity.”
Float entries will be judged on originality, creativity, design, workmanship, balance, effective utilization of natural materials, presentation, and overall appeal. Prizes for the float competition are $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place.
“Ever since I can remember, UFO has been a consistent participant in the Liberation Day float competition to represent the Filipino community in the annual event, except in 2011 when we only joined in the parade but not the contest due to budget limitations,” Cañedo told Saipan Tribune.
While the organization does not have a specified budget this year, Cañedo noted that they have been receiving donations of materials such as plywood and nails as well as technical expertise from generous sponsors on island.
He disclosed that Hawaiian Rock Product provided them with the heavy equipment truck they could use as the base of the float.
“We really solicited from private businesses and individuals because we want to pull off the float in time for the July 4 parade,” added Cañedo.
The committee chair expressed optimism that many individuals from member organizations of UFO will help out in making the float to promote camaraderie within the group and demonstrate their support for the biggest community event on island.
