Typhoon Champi causes flooding

Heavy rains brought by Typhoon Champi caused flooding along the main highways of Saipan Friday afternoon.

At about 4pm, a police car was on standby near the Coca-Cola building along Middle Road as water occupied the entire opposite lane. The heavy downpour resulted in close to zero visibility that slowed down vehicles.

Floodwaters cascading strongly from the Sugar King Park covered the four lanes of the highway across Taro Sue in Garapan.

A big portion of the main highway in Tanapag was also submerged.

Most areas of Beach Road from Garapan to San Antonio were likewise flooded. It became dangerous for motorists to travel along Beach Road starting at 2pm Friday as water covered most portions of the highway. Strong winds and rain also caused near zero visibility along Beach Road.

“It’s so scary to drive along Beach Road on Friday afternoon. I decided to use Middle Road, but still it’s flooded there,” a motorist told Saipan Tribune.

Cascading floodwaters near the Shell Gas Station and Joeten Dandan posed problems to motorists.

Some patrol and traffic officers told Saipan Tribune on Saturday that there was no major traffic accident, but they monitored a lot of flooded streets.

On Thursday night, Mobil gas stations ran out of fuel supply as a long line of motorists filled their gas tanks.

Packing maximum sustained winds at 115 miles per hour, Typhoon Champi moved yesterday farther away from the Marianas.
