Former Guam chief prosecutor Phillip J. Tydingco informed the CNMI Legislature on Monday that he has joined Imperial Pacific International (CNMI) as a “general counsel.”
Tydingco, who has had a lengthy stint with the Guam Office of the Attorney General well as a private law career in the CNMI, informed lawmakers of his new role in a courtesy visit to both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
IPI senior vice president for special projects Viola Alepuyo accompanied Tydingco in Monday’s meetings.
House Speaker Ralph Demapan (R-Saipan), Reps. Angel Demapan (R-Saipan), Frank Aguon (R-Saipan), Donald Barcinas (R-Saipan), John Paul Sablan (R-Saipan), Alice Igitol (R-Saipan), Lorenzo Deleon Guerrero (Ind-Saipan), and minority leader Rep. Edmund Villagomez (Ind-Saipan) welcomed Tydingco in Monday’s meet and greet.
Tydingco was also scheduled to meet with CNMI senators in a closed-door meeting.
Rep. Demapan said the CNMI is “pleased to have him here.”
“I am very happy to see that somebody like [Tydingco] would join the company in that capacity, because I believe it is important for a company of this magnitude…to have somebody in that position [who is] aware of cultural sensitivities in the Marianas,” he said, adding that Tydingco’s knowledge of the Marianas could help the company make better decisions.
“We are very happy to see you and [IPI] has made a brilliant choice,” Demapan said.
Speaker Demapan echoed this.
“With his experience and knowledge in the legal aspect…I believe this will enhance IPI in their legal matters,” he said, before thanking Tydingco for the courtesy visit.
Although he had some questions for the new IPI counsel, Demapan said that Tydingco made clear that he merely had the job for three hours prior to meeting with the members of the Legislature.
“I am sure this would not be the [last time meeting him],” said the speaker.
