In a first for the annual Liberation Day parade, a stabbing incident involving two men marred what was supposed to have been a joyous 73rd Liberation Day parade in Garapan yesterday afternoon. Both men were injured.

One was stabbed in the back and was treated in an ambulance. He was seen talking with medics and police officers in the ambulance.

The other man was treated at the scene with cuts in his fingers. He was heard telling family members and police officers that the other man had previously beaten up his younger brother.

A police officer was seen standing over a knife that had been dropped on the ground near a small bridge along the Beach Road pathway.

The incident happened shortly after the last float of the parade passed at about 4:15pm behind a tent across the KS Market.

A woman said that prior to the stabbing, the two men had a confrontation behind a tent.

She said one slapped the other in the face, then escalated into one brandishing a knife and stabbing the other.

The woman said she believes the two men were both drunk.

More than 15 police officers responded to the scene.

When Saipan Tribune left the scene, police officers were still talking to the two men involved and some witnesses.
