Michelle Sablan and Irene Torres were recently confirmed and were sworn in Monday as the newest members of the Northern Marianas College Board of Regents.

The Senate confirmed Torres and Sablan’s nominations to the NMC Board of Regents last week and Gov. Ralph DLG Torres administered their oath of office on Monday.

According to the Office of the Governor’s Facebook page, both Torres and Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios “place their full trust in them to provide NMC with the proper guidance and direction to continue raising the bar and improving the quality of higher education in the Marianas.”

NMC interim president Frankie Eliptico said that Sablan would bring years of experience to NMC and a passion to develop young leaders.

“Sablan, a local entrepreneur who has owned and operated local businesses, brings years of private sector experience and a passion for developing young leaders. Her insight and experience are important as NMC continues its growth and its workforce development efforts,” he said.

Eliptico added that Sablan is actively involved and contributes to the NMI Girl Scouts, Stellar Marianas, and other organizations.

Torres, on the other hand, has been an NMC board member since 2016 and this would be her second reappointment as an NMC regent.

“Torres has years of experience and is a great advocate [for] higher education and expanding student programs and services. She has also worked as a staff member of NMC in the past, so she has in-depth knowledge of the college’s operations and students’ needs for their educational growth,” Eliptico said.

He added Torres has volunteered for the Marianas March Against Cancer, the Lady Diann Torres Foundation, and other organizations.

Both Sablan and Torres are NMC alumnae, according to Eliptico, and he is confident that both will bring first-hand student experience to the decision-making role of the board.

“The NMC Board of Regents plays a critical role as it sets the policies that guide all employees and students and also leads the strategic direction of the institution,” he said.

The other NMC regents are board chair Charles Cepeda, Elaine Orilla, Michaela Sanchez, Zenie Mafnas, and Jesse Tudela.
