A two-cornered fight between the Route33 Armatech Hustlers and the Smoke Pub Magic 8 Ball is shaping up in the 2014 Saipan Billiards Association Budweiser Open 8-Ball Thursday league.

Both teams downed their respective foes in last Thursday’s matches held in various bars on the island, but the Hustlers remained atop the standings with a three-win edge over the Magic 8 Ball.

The Hustlers dealt the Barcode Breakers a 10-5 beating to improve their record to 66-39 against the 63-42 of the Smoke Pub-backed squad, which waltzed to a 12-3 decision over the visiting Jokers Homeboyz (56-49).

The Breakers dropped to 44-61 to remain in seventh place, 12 wins ahead of the cellar-dwelling Jhonny’s Team SCS (32-73).

The Hustlers started the match on the wrong foot after Oscar Sablan dropped his opening singles game against the Breakers’ Ghelmark Cabrera. Route33 then went on a rampage winning seven straight behind Senen Pangilinan, Simon Kapileo, Robert Sanciangco, and Rowel Mariano. Sablan then bounced back in one of the doubles events as he teamed up with Sanciangco to give the Hustlers a 7-1 cushion.

Meanwhile, the Magic 8 Ball continue to shadow the Hustlers after manhandling the Homeboyz, 12-3.

Chester Cuento, Rey Hermogenes, Rick Elefante, Rodel dela Cruz, Rico Montano and Primo Jebehn delivered the wins for the Magic 8 Ball.

In other results, the Crazy 8 (55-50) handed Team SCS a 9-6 trouncing, while the Round 2 National Alamo Car Rental (54-51) pulled off a 10-5 triumph over the Poseidon Titans (50-55).

In the Tuesday league, the Saipan TV Hustlers run away with a 13-2 triumph over the Johnny’s Crazy 8, the Voyagers squeezed out an 8-7 decision against the Str8 Shooters, and Sang&D’Gang won by forfeit against the Lancheras.

The Voyagers remained on top with a 73-32 slate, followed by the Hustlers’ 68-37 record, while the Str8 Shooters are in third (64-41). The Crazy 8 (54-51), Sang&D’Gang (42-63) and the Lancheras (14-91) complete the standings. (Jon Perez)
