Twin wins for Ol’Aces 2; Gen Cup prevails

The Ol’Aces 2 swept their final two games in the elimination round of the 2016 TanHoldings Christmas Basketball Tournament last Saturday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium to make it to the playoffs of the boys U16 division contest.
The Ol’Aces 2 first edged the Rollers 1, 47-43, and then crushed the Ol’Aces 1, 52-32, in their make-up game to finish the round-robin preliminary with a 5-2 record. Pending results of last Monday’s matches, the Ol’Aces 2 are in second place behind the unbeaten and first semifinalist 670 Sonics (7-0), while Rollers 1 and MHS, which hold similar 4-2 cards, are likely to move into the playoffs, too.
Rikko Lizama lifted the Ol’Aces 2 to the 3-point win against Rollers 1 after scoring 22 points, including 6 of the team’s last 9 points. Troy Ngirarois drilled the 3 other markers of the Ol’Aces and backed up Lizama. Ngirarois and John Ichihara combined for 15 points to back up Lizama.
Jude Tengco paced Rollers 1 with his 17 points.
Lizama was still the top scorer for the Ol’Aces 2 in their 20-point win over the Ol’Aces 1 after firing 16 markers. Three other Ol’Aces players chipped in at least 6 points apiece in the easy win.
Duncan Laxa had 11 points for the Ol’Aces 1, which dropped to a 2-4 record.
The Ol’Aces 1 earlier prevailed against the 670 Thunder, 46-35, while Gen Cup also won the battle of teams in the lower half of the standings after outclassing Rollers 2, 53-48.
John Paul Cruz starred in Gen Cup’s victory after recording 18 points, while John Elchico contributed 10.
Patrick Duenas had 16 points for Rollers 2, which failed to notch a single win in the tournament. Gen Cup improved to a 2-4 record.
The Ol’Aces 1 also earned its second win in six games after its double-digit victory against the 670 Thunder.
Again, Laxa stood out for the Ol’Aces 2 after making 22 points, while Parsley Linaogo tallied 16 points for the 670 Thunder (2-4).
