Twin wins for SIS; GCA prevails
Grace Christian Academy and Saipan International Schools’ girls teams secured wins over their respective opponents in the 2018-2019 Commonwealth Coalition of Private Schools Association High School Volleyball League last Tuesday.
The Lady Eagles hosted Mt. Carmel School’s junior varsity squad and coasted to a 25-7, 25-7 victory. With the win, GCA is still undefeated, as it improved to a 2-0 record, while the Lady Knights slid to a 0-3 slate.
Things didn’t fare well for MCS’ varsity team either, as it failed to defend its homecourt against SIS 1. The Lady Geckos overwhelmed MCS in two sets, 25-11, 25-15, as the former have yet to drop a game and perched atop the team standings with their 3-0 record. Mt. Carmel’s varsity crew, on the other hand absorbed its first loss of the season after a 2-0 start.

The Lady Geckos made a twin kill last Tuesday, as SIS 2 prevailed against a reeling Agape Christian School in three back-and-forth sets, 25-19, 17-25, 15-12. While the Lady Torchbearers closely competed with the Lady Geckos’ second squad, their efforts were not enough to vault them over SIS 2, which celebrated its first victory in the tournament after dropping its first two matches. Agape remains winless and fell to a 0-2.
The pair of victories in the girls division allowed SIS to sweep its Tuesday triple-header, as the school also won its duel against Mt. Carmel in the boys division. Mili Saiki coaches both the SIS 1 girls team and SIS boys team and was proud of the squads’ recent success. While she acknowledged that coaching two highly-skilled teams is tiring, she nonetheless enjoys the opportunity to invest in the teams’ growth and development.
“It’s tiring, but I love volleyball, and I love dedicating my time to it,” Saiki said. “The boys and girls are very excited, so when you see that they want to improve and that they love volleyball, you just do it.”
Meanwhile, the high school games will resume today with SIS squaring off against GCA in both the boys and girls division at the Eagles court in Navy Hill. Over in As Lito, SIS 2 will host MCS’ varsity team, while the latter’s JV crew will take on Agape.
