Tan Siu Lin Foundation/Northern Marianas Sports Association Male Student Athlete of the Year Robbie Schorr lived up to high expectations after winning two division titles in the 19th Pacific Islands Club Tennis Championships.

Schorr first bagged the boys U16 doubles championship with Anthony Gregoire after they survived Jimin Woo and Jun Cheol Hwang in an extended finale last Sunday at the PIC hard court. Schorr and Gregoire dropped the closely fought first set, 6-7 (4-7), but prevailed in the last two, 7-6 (7-5), 10-6, to secure the division crown.

The eventual champions made it to the finals following a 7-6, 6-2 semis triumph over David Kwon and Jun Wang, while Hwang and Woo advanced after eliminating Andy Kim and Sam Ryu, 6-2, 6-2. Kim and Ryu earlier ousted Daniel Kang and Isaac Heo, 7-6, 6-4, to march into the Final Four.

After the tough doubles finale, Schorr returned to the court to duel Woo anew and this time with the men’s open singles crown at stake. Pacific Oceania’s No. 1 U16 player went on to assert his might over Woo after earning a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Schorr barged into the finals after downing Sean Lee, 6-2, 6-1, and CNMI national team coach Jeff Race, 6-1, 6-3. Woo also swept his two opponents—Vincent Tudela (6-1, 6-2) and Bobby Cruz (6-2, 6-4) to set a title duel against Schorr.

In other results, Malika Miyawaki, Daniel Kang, Nason Wessel, Hwang, Hyejin Elliot, Dana Lee, and Serin Chung also won in the second and final week of the tournament.

Serin notched a pair of titles, as she teamed up with Dana Lee in earning the girls U12 doubles crown and then partnered with Elliot in taking the U16 doubles tiara. Serin and Dana prevailed against Hoo Wang and Anna Kwon in the semis, 7-5, 6-2, and then defeated Helen Kim and Seiyul Hong in the finals, 6-0, 6-3. Kim and Hong made it to the title game following a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Irin Chung and Savita Sikkel.

In the girls U16 doubles finals, Serin and Elliot won their head-to-head showdown against Maria Gregoire and Kim, while Wessel and Hwang did the same in their boys U12 doubles finals match Wataru Kadokura and June Yu.

In the men’s open 4.0 singles, Daniel Kang topped Andy Kim in the finals, 6-3, 6-2, while in the women’s open singles, Miyawaki swept Mayuko Arriola, 6-0, 6-2.

Meanwhile, PIC Saipan would like to thank the following for supporting the two-weekend competition: Triple J Truckload, Kensington Hotel, Bridge Capital, LLC, and Pacific Trading Company.
