Tsunami Saipan gets high-point awards

Tsunami Saipan Swimming Center brought home nine high-point awards from the 2014 Guam Swimming Championships held late last month at the Hagatna Swimming Pool.

The visiting club bagged three first place high-point plums, three second place, and three third in the last off-island tournament of the 2013-2014 season.

Nanaka Watanabe, Sophia Gauran, and Angel Marie Tan topped their respective age groups to lead Tsunami Saipan’s campaign in the two-day tournament held last May 30 and 31. Winners were selected based on how they finished in each races, as they received points corresponding to their rankings.

The 8-year-old Watanabe joined five events and finished first in all the races. She timed in at 49.27 seconds in the 50m breaststroke, 1:25.97 in the 100m freestyle, 3:10.30 in the 200m freestyle, 1:146.56 in the 100m breaststroke, and 3:33.41 in the 200m individual medley. She defeated teammate Ashley Dangol in the battle for the top spot in the girls U8 age group.

In the boys division, Anthony Camacho-Deleon Guerrero and Hans Xu made it to the podium, placing second and third, respectively in the U8 division. Camacho was first in the 50 and 100m butterfly, second in the 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyle, fifth in 50 backstroke, and third in the 200m IM. Xu ruled the 50m breaststroke and 100m backstroke, was ranked fourth in the 100m freestyle, third in the 200m freestyle, second in the 50m backstroke, and sixth in the 50m freestyle.

In the girls 9 to 10 age group, Gauran reigned supreme, as she won the 50m breaststroke, 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, 200m IM, and 50m butterfly and placed second in the 50m backstroke. Joining Gauran in the Top 3 was teammate and runner-up Aika Watanabe, while in the boys division, nine-year-old Juhn Tenorio saved third place.

In the girls 15 to 16 age group, Tan triumphed after prevailing in the 50m, 100m, and 200m butterfly and 50m, 100m, and 200m breaststroke, and getting runner-up honors in both the 200m and 400m IM races.

In the boys 17 to 18 age group, Kensuke Kimura joined only three events and still managed to make it to the winners circle after placing third in his division. Kimura participated in the 50m butterfly (27.03 seconds), 50m backstroke (29.09 seconds), and 50m freestyle (26.14 seconds).
