The Tan Siu Foundation is on board University of Guam’s pilot athletic scholarship program for NMI student-athletes.
The TSL Foundation made it possible for UOG to award athletic scholarships to five individuals from the NMI by donating $10,000 to the scholarship program. This is the first time that UOG has awarded athletic scholarships to NMI student-athletes, as the institution has been reviving and promoting various sports programs in the campus, while it continues to provide individuals living in the Micronesian region opportunities to gain higher education without having to look far.
“The Tan Siu Lin Foundation is honored to partner with the University of Guam for the launching of this important program. Our foundation puts a premium on initiatives that focus on education so it’s great to know that with this program, more individuals from our islands will have the opportunity to go to college through an athletic scholarship,” Tan Siu Lin Foundation executive director Merlie Tolentino said.
Antonio Norita and Isaiah Teigita of baseball, Christian Tapay of basketball, and Aloyzeus Angeles and Paulyn Joyce of soccer are the first recipients of the scholarship program. They each will receive $2,000 each from the $10,000 that the TSL Foundation donated for the pilot program.
“Congratulations to the five NMI student-athletes.We encourage them to take advantage of this opportunity to excel in the sport that they love. We hope they will return to the NMI, play for the national team, and be part of our workforce, Tolentino added.
The CNMI Scholarship Office and the University of Guam Endowment Foundation are also involved in the athletic scholarship program and the Tan Siu Lin Foundation hopes to see more private and public entities step up and assist UOG to make this initiative sustainable.
UOG president Dr. Thomas Krise was on Saipan last week with UOG Enrollment Management & Student Success dean Lawrence Camacho and other UOG representatives for the athletic scholarship signing ceremony that was announced in front of UOG alumni from the NMI. Krise thanked the TSL Foundation and TanHoldings for their support to the pilot program and continued commitment to education across the Micronesian region. (PR)
