Tropical storm watch is now hoisted in Northern Islands

A tropical storm watch remains in effect for Alamagan, Pagan and Agrihan in the Northern Islands as Tropical Storm Krovanh nears typhoon strength.

According to the latest information on Tropical Storm Krovanh—as received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center—tropical storm conditions, including tropical storm force winds of 39 mph or more, are possible within 24 hours.

As of 4pm yesterday, the center of Tropical Storm Krovanh was located by satellite about 125 miles east-northeast of Agrihan, 155 miles northeast of Pagan, 170 miles north-northeast of Alamagan, and 340 miles north-northeast of Saipan.

Tropical Storm Krovanh is west-northwest at 15 mph, and this motion is expected to continue with a turn toward the north by Friday, with little change in forward speed. This track was projected take Krovanh within 110 miles northeast of Agrihan shortly after midnight last night.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to 65 mph. Tropical Storm Krovanh is expected to intensify over the next couple of days and could become a typhoon by early this morning.

Residents of Alamagan, Pagan, and Agrihan should prepare for tropical storm conditions. Make sure there is adequate food and drinking water available in a shelter located away from the shore. Protect properties against coastal inundation, heavy rain and strong winds. Do not attempt any interisland travel.

The CNMI Emergency Operations Center will be monitoring the movement of Tropical Storm Krovanh and will be issuing bulletins as they become available.
