Tropical storm to pass near Anatahan

Tropical Depression 25W was upgraded last night to Tropical Storm Champi and is projected to become a typhoon when it passes through the Northern Islands north of Saipan in the vicinity of Anatahan on Friday night.

As of 7pm last night, Champi was located about 710 miles east-southeast of Agrihan, 655 miles east-southeast of Pagan, and 665 miles east of Saipan.

According to the weather bulletin issued by the CNMI Emergency Operations Center, Tropical Storm Champi is moving west-northwest at 20 mph.

“Motion in this general direction is expected to continue through Saturday, but Champi is forecast to slow down during the next 12 hours. …Maximum sustained winds have increased to 40 mph. Tropical Storm Champi is forecasted to continue intensifying during the next several days,” the agency said.

Residents are being urged to continue preparedness steps to include: securing loose objects around the house and/or removing and securing objects to prevent them from being picked up and propelled by possible, strong winds.

Residents living in tents, damaged homes, or homes with compromised safety are strongly encouraged to take precautionary measures and to anticipate heavy rain, strong winds, and possible flooding.
