Tropical disturbance to evolve into a storm

Share

The Marianas has been put on Tropical Storm Watch as Tropical Depression 06W continues to make its way to Guam and the tropical disturbance is expected to become a tropical storm today.

Due to the threat of the tropical depression, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres has declared Tropical Storm Condition 3 on Rota, which means that tropical storm conditions, including damaging winds of 39 mph or more are possible today, Tuesday.

The Homeland Security And Emergency Management Agency issued an advisory last night that localized flooding will be possible in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Check storm drains in your area to make sure they are not clogged. If planning anything outdoors, have a backup plan in place.

According to the National Weather Service in Guam, the disturbance continues to move west-northwest at 13 mph and is expected to make a slight turn toward the northwest with a slight decrease in forward speed this afternoon and tonight. Maximum sustained winds currently remain at 35 mph with 06W forecasted to become a tropical storm sometime today.

The center of Tropical Depression 06W was last seen at about 125 miles southeast of Guam, about 150 miles south-southeast of Rota, about 200 miles south of Tinian, and about 210 miles south of Saipan.

Because of the system, Saipan should expect heavier showers and isolated thunderstorms today and throughout the week.

The CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point will be monitoring the movement of Tropical Depression 06W and will be issuing out bulletins as they become available.
