A tropical disturbance in the Marianas region is now the subject of a tropical cyclone formation alert issued by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
The center of the tropical disturbance was expected to pass southwest of Guam late afternoon yesterday or last night.
According to the Emergency Management Office and the U.S. National Weather Service in Guam, the alert means there is a possibility that a tropical cyclone will form within the next 12 to 24 hours.
As of 10:30am yesterday, the tropical disturbance’s center was about 115 miles south-southeast of Guam. The disturbance is expected to move northwest, with the center passing southwest of Guam late Monday night or afternoon.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will bring heavy rain and wind gusts-possibly as high as 35 miles an hour-to the Marianas through today, Tuesday night.
EMO is advising Marianas residents to monitor the progress of this tropical disturbance as “faster-than-expected development could result in more wind and rain than currently expected.”
NWS also issued a small craft advisory that is in effect from 6pm Monday to 6am Wednesday.
NWS said that winds of 20 knots with frequent gusts of up to 30 knots and combined seas of 8 to 9 feet are expected to produce conditions hazardous to operators of small craft Monday night through Tuesday night.
“Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in these conditions,” NWS said in a marine weather statement.
