Triple J Motors awaits guidance on airbag recall
Triple J Motors Saipan is still awaiting guidance from their manufacturers on the recall of cars with potential airbag problems.
According to Triple J Motors general manager Randy Steele, they haven’t received any formal recall procedure yet from their manufacturers.
Manufacturers for Triple J Motors include Mazda Motor Corp., Mitsubishi Motor Corp., and Hyundai Motor Corp.
“Because the manufacturers that we represent have not yet included Saipan in any formal recall procedure…I don’t want to speculate about the car models on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website and how many of those cars may still be on the road on Saipan,” Steele said.
He said Mazda is conducting a field study via voluntary recall in three Southern states and Puerto Rico.
“The study is not yet complete and the results of such study will determine if they will extend this recall,” Steele said.
He pointed out that Mitsubishi has limited models that used the Takata airbags in the timeline of concern and they are still researching if any potentially affected models made it here to Saipan.
“Hyundai, though, does not use Takata as a supplier,” Steele said.
Under the Mazda models, a total of 64,872 models may be affected. Car model years included Mazda 6 from 2003 to 2007, Mazda Speed 6 from 2006 to 2007, Mazda RX-8 from 2004 to 2008, MPV from 2004 to 2005, and B-Series Truck starting from 2004.
Respectively, Mitsubishi has a total number of 11,985 potentially affected vehicles. This includes Lancer from 2004 to 2005 and Raider from 2006 to 2007.
According to NHTSA, about seven million vehicles are involved in the recalls.
