LITERARY NOOK
Tragic Trumpty Tweeter Tales
Most of the following sonnet is a direct quote from a much longer article which first appeared in bulwark.com. The author, Matt Kaufman, is a writer for Focus on the Family, a global Christian ministry dedicated to helping families thrive. The quote is verbatim with the exception of a few pronouns and articles such as ‘you’ and ‘the’ deleted to fit the quotation into a 14-line sonnet form. The two-line introduction is by me.
A Christian’s Perspective
(excerpts from writing by Matt Kaufman)
Adios Bigly Child Donald. Millions of U.S. voters,
and people of all religions will not miss your constant:
“lying and gaslighting, pathological narcissism,
cruelty, pettiness, bullying, and Twitter tantrums,
schoolyard name-calling, corruption and abuse
of public power for private interests, assaults on
institutions and standards across government and
culture, admiration and emulation of dictators,
derogation of public servants, statesmen and heroes,
the elevation of cranks, crooks and clowns. Bizarre
rants and conspiracy mongering. Shameless appeals
to the ugliest instincts, your blatant racism.
The staggering ineptitude. The sheer stupidity.”
Donald’s Departing Tweets and DDT
(DDT was originally developed as an insecticide but became famous for its environmental impacts. It was banned for agricultural use in the U.S. in 1972.)
He tweeted poison—this Donald
around him was himself
no blue sky, no stars
a void, no books
Donald tweeted to his own echo
in his loneliness he was king
king of his own world
poisoning roots of democracy
destructive tweets were his thing
a self proclaimed King of Debt
a bigly king of bling
a shell game, shallow and lame
a bigly disgrace this Donald
a sham, a shame.
