LITERARY NOOK

Tragic Tales of Tweeter Trump

Share

I appropriated the title and the 13th line of the following sonnet from English poet Richard Lovelace (1617-1657).

‘The Asp Doth on His Feeder Feed’

Tell me not to tweet and I get unkind
So from the White House I call a dump
I harass media with my unquiet mind
Warring against truth I lie and jump
Truth, my lawyer Giuliani says, is not truth
I lie to foes who cross the East lawn field
With vulgar mouth spout language uncouth
Campaigning, haranguing under an eagle shield
My insecurity and demagoguery is such
There are few issues I’m explicitly for
I love myself more than country so much
Each day I love my self, more and more
“Stone walls do not a prison make, nor
iron bars a cage.”
I will commute and pardon my gang
with righteous rage.

They are Leaving Me

“…and do not remember that sometime
they put themselves in danger to take
bread at my hand; and now they range,
busily seeking with a continual change.”
—Sir Thomas Wyatt (1503? – 1542)

They are leaving me, those that used to seek
I see the polls dropping week after week
Economic recovery is taking too much time
Sometimes I raise my campaign voice in anger
Speaking of things as through streets they range
Talking of systemic racism and need for change
It is not a dream and I’m slowly awakening
As the nation turns pandemic eyes against me
I’m the victim of a Democratic and media hoax
By the scientific community and even Dr. Fauci
Republican wheeler dealers have some rotten folks
But since I’m the best ever and still honestly serve
The base will come back; I’ll get what I deserve.

Trumpty Dumpty Falling Down
A haiku headline/senryu sonnet on it

A million book bump
‘Too Much and Never Enough’
from niece Mary Trump.
Full of true Trumpty stuff
‘Too Much and Never Enough’
million seller calls his bluff.
Prince of Malfeasance
inept in his incompetence
demanding obeisance.
Totally lacking in empathy
sadistic malevolence prevails
tea and sympathy fails.
Ashes of loathing in polls
a lonely soul rakes coals.
