Traditional sail from Yap to be displayed at UOG

The woven pandanus sail used by the Lamotrek, Yap traditional navigators for the welcoming ceremony of the Festival of Pacific Arts will be presented to University of Guam President Robert Underwood during a ceremony in the atrium of the Jesus and Eugenia Leon Guerrero Business and Public Administration Building on the UOG campus.
Underwood sailed in one of the canoes as a guest of the Lamotrek delegation in the welcoming ceremony for traditional navigators held early Sunday morning.
“It was an honor to participate in the ceremony and observe the skill of these traditional navigators,” said Underwood. “The University is proud to display this woven sail as a symbol of our connection and shared history as people of the islands.”
The ceremony is hosted by the traditional navigators, seafarers, and weavers from Lamotrek, Yap.
The sail will be on display at the University until August. (PR)
